2019 MACKINNON STAKES – RACE ANALYSIS AND TIPS

Harntell and Gailo Chop come across from out wide and Magic Wand should be positive. HARTNELL (1) was one of many that had very little luck in the Caulfield Cup last time. Run was terrific, and he was strong in the Turnbull at this course and distance prior. Reportedly having his last start here and think that he is going well enough to go out with a bang. Gets a great scenario.

KINGS WILL DREAM (8) beat him home in that Turnbull and he is well suited coming back to Flemington. MELODY BELLE (15) had the perfect storm (literally) last week but she did it well and no issue going out to 2000m now. So reliable she can't be ignored.

CAPE OF GOOD HOPE (13) can bounce back from the Cox Plate while MAGIC WAND (14), who was very good at the Valley, is an interesting runner turned out quickly from the Melbourne Cup.

Seppelt Mackinnon Stakes (G1)

Age: 3yo and up Type: OPEN

After finishing second on six occasions at Group/Grade 1 level, the Aidan O'Brien-trained mare Magic Wand, who was backing up after finishing 10th in Tuesday's Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), broke through with a deserved victory at the elite level here. She was given a good trip by Ryan Moore, racing in third place before moving up to challenge at the 300m. She took the lead at the 150m and then went on to score a very good win. The favourite Melody Belle, who has chasing her 11th Group 1 win, was eased from her difficult barrier (15) and settled back in third last place in the 16-runner field. She looked for a run at the 300m, eased into the clear nearing the 200m and then came with a strong late run for (1 length) second in a really good performance. The multiple Group 1 winner Hartnell tracked the leader (Gailo Chop), moved up approaching the home turn, got to the front halfway down the straight and then battled courageously for third on his final start. The nine-year-old now retires after 13 wins and 23 placings from 58 starts. Life Less Ordinary was tenth on the rails at the home turn and then ran on very well for (1.3 lengths) fourth with Fifty Stars holding on well for (3.3 lengths) fifth and Kings Will Dream making ground from 11th at the home turn to finish (3.5 lengths) sixth.
