2019 GRAND PRIX STAKES – RACE ANALYSIS AND TIPS

Mission Phoenix will go fast from a wide gate and lead Mosshiki, Savvy Valentino and Alignment. MISSION PHOENIX (6) relished the step up to 2000m last start when he took over a long way from home and sustained the effort to score by a length at Kembla. Big step up in class today but is a promising stayer from a gun stable - he looks up to the task.

CHAINS OF HONOUR (5) returned from a six-month spell with a commanding win in a Class 2 over 1800m at Hawkesbury last time out. Like the top pick he has won 2/3 starts and is certainly going places. DON'T WAIVER (1) continued his long run of good results when he closed strongly to grab 2nd over 2000m at Doomben recently. Sure to be hard to hold out again over the extra furlong.

SMART METEOR (2) stepped up sharply from 1300m to 2000m but managed to account for Don't Waiver at Doomben. Will take a lot from that run and is sure to give a great sight. MOSSHIKI (4) has minor claims - expect the winner to come from the top four selections.

Form Preview

The Gerald Ryan-trained three-year-old Chains Of Honour looks a very promising young stayer after advancing in class to win this Group 3 feature and take his record to three wins from four starts. After settling in eighth place, Mark Zahra elected to make an early (wide) move due to the moderate pace and he took the gelding to the front nearing the 1200 metres mark. He then travelled well before ducking out suddenly nearing the 200 metres, Zahra then straightened him and he drew away to score impressively by two and half lengths. The Mark Newnhamtrained Mission Phoenix, also progressing from lower grades, did well in finishing second when having only his fourth start. He settled nicely in second place, outside the leader, and continued to fight on well in the straight to hold second in a solid staying effort. Mosshiki raced in fifth place, one off the rails, improved rounding the home turn and then kept battling on well to hold third, just in front of Smart Meteor who steadily made ground from near tail of the field to finish (3.9 lengths) fourth.
