2020 MILLIE FOX STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Millie Fox Stakes is a Group 2 race for fillies and mares conducted by the Australian Turf Club at Rosehill.

The Millie Fox Stakes was first run at Rosehill in 1996 when it was introduced by the Sydney Turf Club in memory of the late Millie Fox, wife of coal trucking tycoon Stan Fox.

Together they were Sydney's biggest racehorse owners in the 1960s and 1970s when they had hundreds of horses trained by Jack Denham and then Brian Mayfield-Smith from their Nebo Lodge stables at Rosehill.

Millie Fox maintained Nebo Lodge for several years following the death of her husband before entering into an ownership partnership with Bob Lapointe of Muskoka Farm and English pools magnate Robert Sangster with Brian Mayfield-Smith as their private trainer.

This powerful backing gave Mayfield-Smith a team of more than 300 horses that enabled him to end Tommy Smith's 33-year reign as Sydney's champion trainer in 1986-87.

The Millie Fox Stakes is run under Set Weights and Penalty conditions over the distance of 1300m.

The 2020 Millie Fox Stakes was worth $200,000.

From 1996 until 2005 the Millie Fox Stakes was run over 1200m. It was increased in distance to 1300m in 2006.

The Millie Fox Stakes carried Listed Race status from 1996 until 2006. In 2007 it was promoted to a Group 3 race and became a Group 2 race in 2013.

Sydney's reigning premier trainer Chris Waller trained four winners of the Millie Fox Stakes in a row – Red Tracer (3 wins) and Catkins.

Daysee Doom went on to win the Coolmore Classic in 2018 becoming the first mare since Chlorophyll in the race's first edition to do that double.

Notable winners of the Millie Fox Stakes include Chlorophyll (1996), Dashing Eagle (1997), Gentle Genius (2003), Montana Flyer (2010/2011), Red Tracer (2012, 2013, 2014), Catkins (2015), First Seal (2016), In Her Time (2017), Daysee Doom (2018) and White Moss (2019).

The 2019 Millie Fox Stakes was won by White Moss from I Am Serious and Savatiano.
