2020 TODMAN STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Todman Stakes is Group 2 race for two-year-old colts and geldings conducted by the Australian Turf Club as a major lead-up to the Golden Slipper.

The race was first run as the Todman Slipper Trial in 1973 and is traditionally run two weeks before the $3.5 million Golden Slipper, the world's richest two-year-old race.

The Todman Stakes winner is exempt from ballot for the Golden Slipper.

The Todman Stakes is named after the 2YO colt who won the first running of the Golden Slipper in 1957. It was known as the Todman Slipper Trial from 1973 until 2004 and has been run as the Todman Stakes since 2005.

Since its inception the Todman Stakes has been run over 1200m under set weight conditions. From 1973 to 1979 the race was run under set weights with penalties. From 1980 to 1984 all colts and geldings carried 54kg and since 1985 all colts and geldings carry 55.5kg.

The Todman Stakes became a Listed Race in 1979, a Group 3 race in 1980 and was promoted to Group 2 status in 1986.

The Todman Stakes was traditionally run at Rosehill Gardens from 1973 until 2014 with the exception of 2008 when it was run at Canterbury. Since 2015 the Todman Stakes has been run at Randwick.

The Todman Stakes/Golden Slipper Stakes double has been won five times by Luskin Star (1977), Marauding (1987), Tierce (1991), Pierro (2012) and Vancouver (2015).

The Todman Stakes/ATC Sires' Produce Stakes has been won five times (Luskin Star, Tierce, Octagonal, Align, Pierro) and the Todman Stakes/Champagne Stakes double six times by Rosie Heir, Luskin Star, Full And By, Tierce, Meurice and Pierro.

Yes Yes Yes would go on to become the first 3yo to win The Everest in the following Spring.

The 2020 Todman Stakes was worth $300,000 prizemoney.
