2020 MAURICE MCCARTEN STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Maurice McCarten Stakes is a Group 3 sprint race conducted by the Australian Turf Club at Rosehill.

The Maurice McCarten Stakes is traditionally run as part of the Golden Slipper carnival at Rosehill and run over 1100m.

The race is named after Australian Racing Hall of Fame member Maurice McCarten, one of Sydney racing's greatest jockeys and trainers who died in 1971, but has carried many different sponsor names since its inception in 1988.

The Maurice McCarten Stakes was first run over 1200m from 1988 until 2009.

Since 2010 the Maurice McCarten Stakes has been run over 1100m under quality handicap conditions with a maximum topweight of 61kg.

The Maurice McCarten Stakes was a Listed Race from 1993 to 2013. It has been a Group 3 race since 2014.

After being known as a horse who didn't win too often, Dothraki was awarded the 2018 edition in the Steward's Room when he was interfered with by first over the line Sprightly Lass.

It was worth $160,000 in prizemoney in 2020.

Notable winners of the Maurice McCarten Stakes include Targlish, Euclase, Friend's Venture, Brawny Spirit, Magic Of Sydney, Identikit, Antiquity, Mustard, Snippetson, Hoystar, Atomic Force and Target In Sight.

The 2019 Maurice McCarten Stakes was won by Easy Eddie from She Knows and All Over Bosanova.
