2020 QUEEN OF THE SOUTH STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Queen Of The South Stakes is Group 2 race for fillies and mares conducted by the South Australian Jockey Club at Morphettville as a feature of the May racing carnival.

The Queen Of The South Stakes was first run in 1980 and has been run every year Morphettville over 1600m under set weights and penalty conditions.

The Queen Of The South Stakes has been known as the Coolmore Classic, Matchmaker Stakes, Southwark Classic, Sedgwick Stakes and Marsh Classic and was originally run in the late summer. It became a feature of the May carnival in 1993 but has been run in April or early May since 2007.

The Queen Of The South Stakes became a Listed race in 1982 and was elevated to Group 3 in 1986. It has been a Group 2 race since 1987.

The 2020 Queen Of The South Stakes is run over 1600m at Morphettville for $175,000 prizemoney – reduced due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Memphis Blues (1989-1990), Shavano Miss (1991-1992) and Sylvaner (2002-2003) won the Queen Of The South Stakes in successive years.

The late Colin Hayes trained six winners of the Queen Of The South Stakes between 1981 and 1990. Peter Moody won three editions between 2007 and 2012.

Notable winners of the Queen Of The South Stakes include Rose Of Kingston, Star Style Girl, Canny Lass, Adraanito, Memphis Blues, Shavano Miss, Our Marquise, Saleous, Miss Tessla, Spectrum, Noircir, Sylvaner, Cinque Cento, Star Of Giselle, Atlantis Dream and Amelie's Star.

The 2019 Queen Of The South Stakes was won by Music Bay from Snogging and Clearly.
