2020 FRED BEST CLASSIC - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND
The Fred Best Classic is a Group 3 race for three-year-olds conducted by the Brisbane Racing Club usually at Eagle Farm as part of the Queensland racing carnival.
The Fred Best Classic was first run in 1987 and carried many sponsorship names until it became the Fred Best Classic in 2010 when it was named in honour of a leading Brisbane trainer who died in 1983.
The Fred Best Classic is run under set weight conditions. It was at 1350m in 2020 at Doomben with the revamped carnival.
It can be either a lead up to the Queensland Guineas or the Stradbroke Hcp usually run the fortnight later. It was held at Doomben in 2020.
It became a Listed Race in 1996 and has been Group 3 since 2003.
Trainer Peter Snowden holds the recent record with wins in 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2019.
The 2020 Fred Best Classic was run for prizemoney of $125,000 – reduced due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Past winners include Kingdom Bay, Courier Bay, Spot The Rock, Social Rule, Chief De Beers, Staging, Mr Innocent, La Montagna, Gold Edition, El Cambio, Stryker, Skilled, Mental, Havana, Najoom and Counterattack.
The 2019 Fred Best Classic was won by Military Zone from Baccarat Baby and Krone.
