Lees hoping for an impressing return at Rosehill

3 minute read

Kris Lees is hoping Saturday’s Lord Mayor’s Cup at Rosehill Gardens will be “music to his ears” with a quartet of runners.

First emergency Attention Run  (Rachel King) is now into the field for the 2000m Listed event and joins stablemates Sixties Groove  (Hugh Bowman),Big Duke  (Nash Rawiller) and Aliferous  (Robbie Dolan).

Lees also accepted with Aliferous in the Chairman's Handicap (2000m) at Saturday's Doomben meeting, but opted for Rosehill when she drew the inside barrier.

"She looks to be our best chance in the Cup," Lees said this afternoon.

"Aliferous is up and going, has been racing well and the good draw is a definite advantage.

"She drew awkwardly last time when fourth in the Gosford Cup (2000m) run at Randwick, coming from well back at the 800m.

"Sixties Groove wasn't too far away when first-up in the Scone Cup (1600m), and has taken improvement from that run.

"I'm expecting him to race well, but he will be better again for this run.

"Big Duke is resuming and is capable of performing well fresh, but again will take improvement from Saturday's race.

"Attention Run has had a let-up since mid-March and trialled at Gosford a fortnight ago. We will ride her quietly from a wide draw, but I'm expecting she will need this run."

Juventus (Bowman) also has had a little freshen since a brilliant midweek 1400m win on the Kensington track on April 15 and a narrow second to Wild About Her in a Benchmark 78 Handicap (1550m) on the same track on May 2.

"No reason why he won't run well again, especially from his inside draw," Lees said.

Kiwi filly Riva Capri (James McDonald) also has drawn well in the Benchmark 78 Handicap (1400m) against her own sex.

"Riva Capri ran really well second up when just beaten on the Kensington track last week, and has come on from that run," Lees said.

"She goes from a midweek Benchmark 70, but drops 4.5kg and should run well again."

Stable apprentice Louise Day, currently based in Sydney, will ride Articus in the Benchmark 88 Handicap (1500m) and Agent Pippa in the Benchmark 78 Handicap (1100m), using her 3kg city claim on both.

"Articus is always thereabouts, and capable on his day," Lees said.

"Agent Pippa was plain first-up a month ago in the Listed Hawkesbury Rush (won by stablemate Tactical Advantage) at Rosehill, but handles soft ground.

"I'm hoping she can improve going back to her grade."

Snowzone is Lees' other Rosehill acceptor, but is not a certain starter in the Benchmark 74 Handicap (1200m) for three-year-olds.

He has drawn the outside in a field of 14, and Lees has not named a rider.
