2020 EAGLE FARM MILE (LORD MAYOR'S CUP) - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Lord Mayor's Cup is a Group 3 race conducted by the Brisbane Racing Club at Eagle Farm as part of the Queensland racing carnival.

The race was first run in 1956 as the Labour Day Cup and was held traditionally as a handicap at Doomben on the first Monday in May until 2002 when it was transferred to an April date.

The race distance varied many times between 2000m and 2200m from 1956 until 2005.

In 2006 the race became the Lord Mayor's Cup and has since been run over 1615m at Doomben. It was a Listed race from 1979-1999 and has been Group 3 since 2000. It is now a Set Weights & Penalties race and was at Eagle Farm in 2020.

Winners of the Lord Mayor's Cup since 2006 include Headturner, Rothesay, Strawberry Boy and dual winner Solzhenitsyn.

The 2020 running was for $125,000 and over 1600m – reduced due to the coronavirus outbreak.

It was run as the Eagle Farm Mile in 2020.

Notable winners of the Lord Mayor's Cup include dual winner Our Cavalier, Book Link, Cachondeo, Gunsynd, Zasu, Rhalif, Just Now, Bravery, Comrade, Arborea, Sky Heights, Freemason and This Manshood.

The 2019 Lord Mayors Cup was won by Order Again from Tom Melbourne and Le Juge.
