“Iconic” Ready To Star At The Valley

It’s not often Kris Lees sends a horse to Melbourne during the winter months.

But he has done so this week and is hoping the move will pay dividends with Iconic Star  at The Valley tomorrow.

Lees has booked Damien Oliver to ride the Brazen Beau filly against her own age in the 3YO Handicap (1000m).

"This looks a suitable race for Iconic Star, especially being a SUPER VOBIS filly (eligible for Victorian bonuses)," Lees said today.

"She travelled to Melbourne without a problem, and has settled in well.

"The favorite (unbeaten Melbourne filly Ms Catherine) is obviously going to be hard to beat, and our filly has drawn awkwardly (nine in a field of 10).

"But she is a pacy filly, so hopefully that won't be a disadvantage.

"Provided she runs well tomorrow, I might leave her in Melbourne to chase another race."

Iconic Star has been an excellent money-spinner for her connections. An $80,000 yearling purchase at the Gold Coast in 2018, she has won five of her 11 starts and earned nearly $92,000 in prizemoney.

Three of her wins have been at tomorrow's distance.

Iconic Star has been freshened since leading and finishing a close sixth (with 59.5kg) to Dirty Work in a Benchmark 70 Handicap (1100m) for three and four-year-olds on the Kensington track on April 15.

She drops 3.5kg tomorrow and returns to racing against her own age, and showed she has retained form with a Gosford barrier trial (800m) victory on May 5.

Meanwhile, stablemate Graff  has been kept in work and is likely to start in the Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) at Grafton on July 8.

The four-year-old stallion finished 10th (beaten just under three lengths) to Tyzone in last Saturday's Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm.

Chief Ironside, who finished 11th in the Stradbroke, is being given a freshen up.
