Success breeds success!

Another victory, this time at Dubbo yesterday, has put Hawkesbury's Mitch Newman on the verge of his equalling his best season of training, and perhaps even setting a new benchmark.

But he has one regret.

"I own my stable of 16 boxes, but wish I had another 10," Newman said today.

"I'm getting offered more horses and would have no trouble filling those extra boxes."

Newman, an experienced horseman who had a successful riding career and also broke in horses for leading Sydney stables before deciding to concentrate fully on training nine years ago, won his ninth race this season when Debrief ($6.50) thumped his rivals at Dubbo.

With leading country jockey Greg Ryan aboard, the Rothesay three-year-old was having his eighth start and raced clear over the closing stages to easily beat $3.20 favorite Japingka and Seawise ($19).

Newman, understandably, was delighted to secure early the services of Ryan, who has ridden a few winners for him previously.

"I rang prior to nominations closing and Greg's wife Pauline, who manages his rides, called back to accept the mount," Newman said.

"It's always good to be able to put Greg on one of my horses in the country."

Newman not only booked Ryan, but did his homework to pave the way for Debrief's breakthrough victory.

"Debrief has always shown some ability in his work and was coming up on the bridle in his races around the home turn but not finishing off," he said.

"I had an idea he wasn't managing 1200m and went back and had a look at his first run in a race (when trained by Tim Martin) over 1000m at Kembla Grange in January.

"He ran fifth and there was merit in the run, and that's why I brought him back to 1000m at Kembla late last month and he ran a good second to Vulpine.

"Debrief f puts himself on the bunny, and was strong to the line at Dubbo.

"Now that he has broken through, I will find another 1000m race for him."

Newman is now only one short of his best season of 10 winners in 2017-18, and believes he can not only equal that but surpass it before the season ends on July 31.

"The team is going well," he said. "I reckon we can get a couple more winners in the coming weeks."
