2020 MEMSIE STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND
The Memsie Stakes is a Group 1 race run under Weight For Age conditions for open class horses at Caulfield conducted by the Melbourne Racing Club.
The Memsie Stakes is run over 1400m. It was first run in 1899 and was won by Veneda.
The Memsie Stakes was originally run over longer but has been at 1400m since 1980.
The Memsie Stakes was a Group 2 race until 2013 when it became a Group 1.
This is the kick off for many major Spring hopefuls each year and leads into the Makybe Diva Stakes two weeks later.
The race has always been won by elite horses but since it became a G1, only G1 horses have been successful.
So You Think was the last Cox Plate winner to do the double. Before him, it was Makybe Diva and Sunline.
Vega Magic won a slot in the Everest after taking the Memsie.
The Memsie Stakes was upgraded to $1million in 2017 but came back to $750,000 in 2020.
It has been a top race for mares with Atlantic Jewel, King's Rose, Miss Finland, Makybe Diva, Magical Miss, Sunline (twice), & Dane Ripper winning since the 1998.
