2020 SAN DOMENICO STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The San Domenico Stakes is a Group 3 race run under Set Weights and Penalty conditions for three year olds at Rosehill conducted by the Australian Turf Club.

The San Domenico Stakes is run over 1100m. It was first run in 1980 and was won by Proud Knight.

The San Domenico Stakes has been run at Randwick, Warwick Farm and Rosehill but been at Rosehill since 2011.

The San Domenico Stakes was a Listed Race to begin with and was a Group 2 from 1986 to 2004 but is a Group 3 now.

Charge Forward won the 2004 San Domenico Stakes from the other top 3yos of his year in Fastnet Rock and Dance Hero in a three way go to the line.

Many Golden Slipper winners have come back in this race and been defeated. In fact the last one to win this race was Tierce in 1991.

It can be the beginning of a Golden Rose preparation. The 2019 edition would end up producing excellent 3yo G1 form for the Spring.

The 2020 San Domenico Stakes was run for prizemoney of $160,000.

Notable winners of the San Domenico Stakes include Exceedance (2019), Graff (2018), Star Turn (2016), Japonisme (2015), Snitzerland (2012), Foxwedge (2011), Shellscrape (2009), Duporth (2008), Gold Edition (2006), Charge Forward (2004), Regimental Gal (2003), Mistegic (2001), Testa Rossa (1999), General Nediym (1997), Our Maizcay (1995), Tierce (1991), Show County (1989), Merimbula Bay (1988), Omnicorp (1987), Sir Dapper (1983) and Black Shoes (1981).
