2020 TRAMWAY STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Tramway Stakes is a Group 2 race run under Set Weights and Penalty conditions for open class horses at Randwick conducted by the Australian Turf Club.

The Tramway Stakes is run over 1400m. It has been occasionally run at Warwick Farm and Rosehill but Randwick is the traditional home.

It was first run in 1886 and was won by Burrilda. It is run on the Tattersalls Club race day.

The Tramway Stakes has mostly been at 1400m. It was previously run as the Tramway Handicap but has become a SW&P race in 2013.

The Tramway Stakes was upgraded to Group 2 in 2014.

Hauraki won the Epsom after being second to Winx in the George Main which had followed his Tramway win. Lucia Valentina won the Turnbull two runs after he remarkable Tramway win when almost falling.

Happy Clapper began a great season after winning the Tramway by winning the Epsom/Doncaster double afterwards.

Before him Hauraki was the last horse to do the Tramway/Epsom double since Chanteclair in 1986.

Dreamforce had been only behind Winx and Brutal in the 2019 Autumn and would come back to win the Tramway in the Spring. He'd also take out the George Ryder Stakes in March.

The 2007 race was not held due to the Equine Influenza break out.

The 2020 Tramway Stakes was run for prizemoney of $200,000.

Notable winners of the Tramway Stakes include Dreamforce (2019), Comin' Through (2018), Happy Clapper (2017), Hauraki (2016), Lucia Valentina (2014), Sincero (2011), Rangirangdoo (2009), Bank Robber (2008), Sportsman (2003), Mr Innocent (2000), Big Dreams (1994), Shaftesbury Avenue (1990), Cole Diesel (1989), Wong (1987), Imposing (1979), Black Onyx (1969), Wenona Girl (1961), Shannon (1945), Lough Neagh (1937), Rogilla/Chatham (1932), Amounis (1928) and Malt King (1910).

The 2019 Tramway Stakes was won by Dreamforce from Te Akau Shark and Eckstein.
