The three-year-old son of Smart Missile drew the widest gate in Saturday's $140,000 Listed Exford Plate (1400m) but jockey Daniel Stackhouse had no hesitation in rolling forward.

Sitting outside the leader, and eventual runner-up Bartley, Crosshaven took over passing the 200m, drawing clear for a one-and-a-half length victory.

Crosshaven won his first two starts on soft tracks before running sixth at Caulfield over 1200m on August 29 when returning from a short-break and is now likely to join stablemate Aysar on a path to the Caulfield Guineas.

Lindsay Park co-trainer Ben Hayes said the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) on September 26 was the next logical step for Crosshaven who firmed from $26 to $15 with TAB Fixed Odds for the Caulfield Guineas after Saturday's win.

Hayes said he hopes Crosshaven will take the required step to be a Caulfield Guineas contender.

"I think that's the race we'll be targeting," Hayes said.

"I thought Stacky rode him really well. He took his time crossing and once he got there he got into a really good rhythm and the 1400 (metres), I thought, really suited him.

"In his races over 1200 he's always been just off the bridle so the step up in trip was good and to see him win like that today was so exciting."
