The Cranbourne-based training duo of Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young hope to enhance their Victoria Derby arsenal at Flemington on Wednesday.

Nominations are yet to close for the $2 million Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington on October 31, but the partners have three Derby hopes lining up on Wednesday.

Busuttin and Young have in recent years had strong representation in the blue riband event with Busuttin preparing Sangster to win the 2012 Derby.

Clinched and Wertheimer both contest the Victoria Derby Trial (1800m) on Wednesday as a stepping stone to the Derby while Albarado runs in the Rendr Trophy (1400m).

Both Clinched and Wertheimer come out of the same race at The Valley on September 5 where Busuttin said the pair had little hope from poor barriers.

Wertheimer fared better of the pair finishing seventh with Clinched in 12th place.

"He was very good first-up and he was great second-up," Busuttin said of Wertheimer.

"Once he drew barrier 15, it was all over for him once he came out of the gates.

"He got back and hit the line without having much room and we've drawn the carpark again, so it looks like we'll be going back on him again.

"I really like the horse and if he had drawn a barrier I think he could win, but as long as he's hitting the line, we're on track for a Derby."

Busuttin hopes to send Wertheimer to the Group 3 Caulfield Classic (2000m) on October 17 following Wednesday's race.

Clinched faces a "fork in the road" on Wednesday according to Busuttin, although the colt has drawn better than his stablemate.

"He was left a bit flat-footed at The Valley, but he didn't get beaten too far," Busuttin said.

"From that barrier (two) we'll be able to put him up in the race a bit more.

"The big track, the 1800 metres will suit him, but it's pretty much a fork in the road for him.

"If he doesn't perform he may end up two-stone lighter!"

Busuttin said a minor hiccup that forced Albarado to miss a run at Caulfield on Saturday should not hinder his Derby prospects.

"He'll go around over the 1400 metres and all going well he'll back up in the (Listed) Super Impose Stakes (1800m) 10 days later," Busuttin said.

"It was just a bit of a niggle, but he's back on track and ready to race."
