Unlucky for some – but not Hawkesbury trainer Tommy Wong and his mare One Step.

Start No 13 held no fears for the $10,000 yearling buy, who shed her maiden status at the non-TAB fixture at Mudgee yesterday.

With Anthony Cavallo aboard, One Step ($2.20 favorite) thrashed her six rivals in the Maiden Handicap (1400m), scoring by more than lengths from Occasional ($3.50) and Another Super ($3.80).

It was Wong's first winner of the new season, and the 21st for Hawkesbury trainers.

One Step began her career for Wong when she contested the Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) for two-year-olds at Randwick on September 29, 2018 and finished 11th to Catch Me.

She was subsequently transferred to fellow Hawkesbury trainer Terry Croft when Wong spent a period on the sidelines, and finished out of the placings in four starts.

One Step  rejoined Wong this year and had managed a 1400m placing at Kembla Grange in May on a heavy track prior to yesterday's assignment.

"I was confident the mare would run well yesterday, especially coming back from a TAB meeting to a non-TAB race," Wong said this morning.

"Her last run at Goulburn (when fifth to Majestic Wings in a 1300m Maiden on September 11) was a good effort as she never got on the track."

One Step, purchased at the 2018 Scone yearling sale, is a four-year-old by the former smart sprinter

Sidestep, who was runner-up in the 2013 Black Opal Stakes (1200m) at Canberra and won two Group 2 races; the Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens that year and the Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) at Randwick the following year.

Sidestep also finished second to Overreach in the 2013 Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill.

One Step has an interesting mix of speed and stamina in her pedigree as her dam Our Abbey is a daughter of former champ Octagonal, and was retired to stud after only four starts, which included two country placings.

Our Abbey's dam Balmeressa, a daughter of former crack Kiwi stayer Balmerino, finished fourth in Melbourne stayer Daacha's 1995 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick and later that year won the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill.

"I haven't tried One Step over too much ground so far, but might be tempted to at least look for a 1600m race for her in the coming weeks," Wong said.
