Winning Trainer: Simon Ryan
"He's winning these races comfortably, he's gone to another level today. It caught me by surprise today.
"I've probably got to take a bit of the blame from previous preparations. I've tried to get him out to 1200 or a bit further. He's so placid and docile that I was looking for further, but keeping him to the shorter trips just seems to be agreeing with him."
Said that he wished it was a Grand Annual trophy in his hand - small stable: "I've got five horses. He was bred by my father-in-law Peter, he's family owned and he's given a lot of people a lot of thrills."
The biggest moment of his training career: "Most definitely. I've won a Saturday race at Caulfield, won at Flemington and I have won a couple of races here, and just got beaten in a Mornington Cup.
"To be honest it has caught me completely off guard. We thought he'd run well but couldn't have foreseen that. It'll sink in on the way home. Really proud of the horse and he's come a long way.
"That 955 metres to 1100 seems to be the key. I was very surprised to see him put a field like that away so easily."
Being a local, what about a Wangoom: "The trouble with the Wangoom is that it is 1200 metres. Talking to Teo, he might be worth throwing in a race like an Oakleigh Plate or a Newmarket. I ca'nt see why not? He's running career best time, beating good horses. Every time we step him up he handles the pressure. 'd be keen to challenge him and step him up again."
Winning Jockey: Teo Nugent
"Tough effort, this horse. I just want to say a massive thanks to Simon and his father-in-law for keeping me aboard. I used to ride this horse a lot early days when he broke his maiden and I won on him at Dunkeld.
"To see him progress through the grades, he put the writing on the wall at Flemington when finished a creditable fifth. He gave them weight last start in the 955 metre race and he ran some time. I was really confident coming into today.
"We drew a little bit of a stick gate and we were in two minds whether we rolled forward or just ride him with a bit of cover. He flew the gates and we landed in a lovely spot outside the leader. He gave one hell of a turn of kick when I asked him at the top of the straight. Good effort.
"I knew he had the potential to be there but when you're up against some of these nice horses, especially from Godolphin, you're not in the 58's like he used to be, I'm just so happy to get some black type here today especially for a Warrnambool trainer like Simon.
Competitive riding rank: "It's a very hard time of year. I've quietened down since I've been down to 1.5 kilos, I've got about 23 winners left of my claim in town, I only claim 1.5 but I've noticed over the past couple of months that I'm only coming to the races for two or three rides in the city and today I came here for one and that's all we needed."
