Alpine Edge stamped himself as the horse to beat in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic following a professional win in the Group 3 B.J. McLachlan at Eagle Farm.

Instilled as $6 second-favourite for the $2 million January 16 showpiece, co-trainer Toby Edmonds said it was likely he would go straight to the race without another start, but left the door ajar for the possibility of running a week before if he feels the colt needed it.

"He is very laid back and that's how most good horses are," Edmonds said.

"He just goes out, does his work. He is very easy to train and continues to improve each time.

"He pulled up really well after his debut and did a bit of even time last Saturday where he towed Jeff Lloyd up behind another one."

Settling beautifully under Robbie Fradd behind the speed, Alpine Edge  took a gap early in the straight and then overpowered Baby Wong in the latter stages.

"Jeez he's a nice horse. It's been a while since I've been on a nice horse like him," Fradd said.

"He raced fresh first-up after he pinged the gates, but today I jumped out neutral, sat back and travelled well.

"He races best with a sit. That's how he races this horse, that's how he has been trained.

"Every time I gallop him my confidence grows more and more and more.

"Magic Millions is a different kettle of fish but he does have the attitude to overcome that."

Shaquero lost his grip on favouritism for the Millions after proving extremely disappointing, finishing seventh, beaten over seven-lengths.

Luke Dittman said he never felt comfortable at any stage.

With Shaquero easing to $15 in the market, his Chris Waller trained stablemate She's All Class is now outright $4.50 MM favourite off the back of her monstrous victory in the Wyong 2YO Magic Millions Classic earlier this month.
