Winkers go back on Coming Around in Chester Manifold

3 minute read

Trainer Brent Stanley suspects Coming Around may be ready for a break in the paddock but wants to make sure he has not been having a lend of the trainer with his past two performances.

Stanley considered a break after the gelding's last start in the Listed Lord Stakes (1700m) at Caulfield on Boxing Day but has decided to press on for one more run.

That will be in Saturday's $140,000 Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m) at Flemington when Coming Around again races in winkers having not raced in the headgear at his past two starts.

Coming Around  finished fourth to Vassilator, an opponent on Saturday, over Saturday's course and distance on December 19 before his last start 10th placing at Caulfield.

The gelding started his campaign at Swan Hill in July and was successful at Flemington the following month while also winning at Ballarat in September.

"I took the winkers off him and I think he's been having a lend of me at his last two starts," Stanley said.

"He peeled out at the 300 (metres) at Flemington like he was going to win and just floated beside them and ran fourth and then he did the same thing the other day.

"I've just kept him fresh and put the winkers back on him. He had a bit of a sharpen up with a gallop.

"Hopefully we'll see a bit of difference from him, but he might be looking for the paddock as well, but everything on the track, his feed bin, his demeanour says that he's booming, so he can go around.

"It's another good race and it doesn't matter whether he's in the paddock today or on Monday."

Coming Around is rated a $19 chance with TAB in latest betting on the Chester Manifold.

The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained King Of Hastings has been scratched from Saturday's race to run in the Heineken Handicap (1200m) at Randwick.

The gelding's scratching has caused a minor reshuffle in betting with Riding The Wave firming into a $3 favourite with Viral next pick at $4.60.

Blazejowski  sits on the third line at $6.50 ahead of Brave Song and Vassilator, both at $8.
