Lindsay Park looking forward to star three-year-olds return

3 minute read

Lindsay Park co-trainer Tom Dabernig was all set to head to Queensland for Saturday’s meeting at the Gold Coast and the upcoming Magic Millions Yearling Sale, but the three-day lockdown in Brisbane that was announced on Friday forced a rethink.

Dabernig, who trains in partnership with his cousin Ben Hayes, will monitor the situation up north before making a final decision.

Hayes is already on the Gold Coast with their bloodstock advisors and a lot of the legwork has been done.

The question for Dabernig is the potential of 14 days in quarantine upon return especially with a number of the stable's better class horses at the stage of galloping ahead of their autumn returns.

Staying in Victoria will allow Dabernig to watch Aysar work at the stable's Euroa  property with Damian Lane aboard the three-year-old on Monday.

Aysar  finished second to Ole Kirk in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas on October 10 and has not been sighted since finishing second to Crosshaven in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes at Flemington three weeks later.

Daniel Stackhouse partnered Crosshaven in a gallop at the Euroa property last Thursday after riding at Wangaratta the day prior.

Dabernig said the pair look great, but unfortunately are likely to line up against each other in their autumn returns in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on January 30.

"We had thought about the (Group 1) Orr Stakes at Caulfield (over 1400m on February 6) for Crosshaven, but we're thinking of taking the more conventional three-year-old route with both Aysar and Crosshaven," Dabernig said.

"They can start off in the Manfred, go to the (Group 3) C S Hayes (1400m at Flemington on February 13) and then hopefully to the (Group 1) Australian Guineas (1600m) two weeks later."

"Unfortunately, it looks like they're going on the same path, so we'll just see how it works out."

Aysar and Crosshaven  have met on three times, with Crosshaven leading Aysar home on two occasions while Aysar led Crosshaven (fourth) home in the Caulfield Guineas.

While Dabernig is looking forward to that pair having a good autumn campaign, he believes Group 1 VRC Oaks winner Personal will be the stable flagbearer.

Personal is likely to resume in the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) at Flemington on February 13.

"She's probably the one I go on about, but Personal seems to have come out of the spring the best," Dabernig said.

"If I was taking an early gamble, I think she'd be the one that will cope with it the best.

"We'll see how she runs first-up whether we go to the Guineas or take her to the Kewney over the mile, then possible to the Vinery into the Australian Oaks in Sydney.

"I think we'll get the first couple of Melbourne runs out of the way to check how she's going, whether we go ambitious or lower the sights a bit."

Of the older horses, last year's Group 1 Australian Cup winner Fifty Stars will be aimed at a repeat of that victory.

"We're probably a bit light on for weight-for-age horses, but hopefully something will put their hand up during the autumn," Dabernig said.
