Last of the line headed for stakes races

3 minute read

Jockey Ryan Hill had a couple of big days in the saddle, but with an eye to the future it was Last Of The Line that gave him cause for celebration.

Ryan Hill booted home a treble at Esperance on Friday before combining with the Stephen Miller-trained Last Of The Line at Ascot on Saturday.

The lightly raced gelding oozes potential and landed his fourth victory from six starts with authority, extending clear in the final 200m after racing outside of the leader Phoneme.

Hill, who has been with Last Of The Line all the way since the son of Blackfriars posted a winning debut nearly 12-months ago, predicts a big future for him.

"He is a big raw unit when you see him in the yard," Hill told Tabradio.

"He still has a lot to learn and has lots of upside.

"He will be better in better company and with a set of blinkers."

Hill believes Last Of The Line can be a force to be reckoned with going forward.

That could come as soon as next month with the four-year-old set to be given a shot at stakes races.

"I would say the Pinjarra Classic (1300m) and Bunbury Stakes (1400m) are what he would be aimed at," Hill said.

"It's going to be a nice to be on him going forward."

The Pinjarra Classic, to be run on February 21 and the Bunbury Stakes two weeks later, are Listed events.

Hill says Miller's patient approach with Last Of The Line is beginning to reap fruitful dividends.

With two thirds in addition to his four wins, Last Of The Line has not missed earning a cheque in his short career.

"That's what I love about SJ (Miller)," Hill said.

"It's all about the horse and looking after them.

"Placing them well and educating them along the way.

"He's had a lot of time for the horse and has taken his time.

"He's got a decent preparation ahead of him."
