Prezado chasing a first Caulfield victory

3 minute read

The Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained Presado will be racing for a start in a Group 1 contest when he tries to win for the first time at Caulfield in the Listed W J Adams Stakes (1000m) on Tuesday.

After an inglorious first-up performance at Flemington on January 16, Prezado  will attempt to win away from his home track of Flemington for just the second time in his six career wins.

Five of the sprinters wins have been over 1000m at Flemington while Prezado has also won over that trip at Pakenham.

Prezado disappointed his trainers when finishing seventh to Fabergino in the Listed Kensignton Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on January 16.

Zahra said Prezado raced too fresh but as there was not a lot of opportunities for the sprinter at present, and with the shape of Tuesday's field, the stable thought it wise to have a shot at the race.

"He had five weeks in between runs, so if anything, he's going to come on for that run," Zahra said.

"He had a good blow, without being stupid.

"He raced a little bit fierce into the breeze. Normally he's back with cover, comes out and has a go, but drawing the outside, he was stuck out there.

Prezado has finished well back at his only two tries at Caulfield, finishing last in the 2018 Group 2 Rubiton Stakes and eighth to Jungle Edge in this race last year on a wet track.

"His Caulfield form is not great, we're hoping that it gets better with maturity," Zahra said.

As for a start in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on February 13, Zahra said that remained a slight possibility, but only if Prezado came out and brained his opponents on Tuesday.

"If you want to go to those things, you probably want to be finishing alongside Fabergino and then you've got Bivouac and those horses coming down," Zahra said.

"They break your heart those horses, so we'll probably just poke along around the edges."

Prezado is an $11 chance in latest TAB betting for Tuesday's race.

Lightly-raced Adelaide sprinter All Banter heads the market at $2.60 ahead of Shamino at $5.
