Chris Scholtz reviews Sydney barrier trials at Randwick on January 21.
RANDWICK January 21
Course Porper/Randwick A Grass; Good 4
18 Heats – Course Proper 2 x 900m (Group/Listed); A Grass 16 Heats 8 x 1050m (2 2YO; 3 Open; 3 Maiden); 8 x 742m (4 2YO; 2 Open; 2 Maiden)
Quality sprinters SPLINTEX and MIZZY won the two course proper trials for the Group horses with a lot of quite rides behind them on horses taking their first step towards the autumn.

Group 2 winner SPLINTEX can be supported with confidence in any race he contests up to 1200m as he has furnished nicely with his spell and looked the part leading easily in his heat to record the quickest time (52.97; 34.38). MIZZY (53.36; 34.64) has now won two trials in great style and it's obvious she has been trained up to run boldly first-up.
SHOUT THE BAR, VICTOREM and FLIT put in nice trials behind SPLINTEX while PRAGUE was the big eye catcher getting home strongly from the rear for second in MIZZY's heat. SAVATIANO and ALL SAINT'S EVE also trailed strongly in this heat.
Easy work for Mizzy and @Reganbayliss as she wins a 900m trial at @royalrandwick on Thursday from a closing Prague with Dreamforce third in 53.36. @CummingsRacing @tabcomau @7horseracing pic.twitter.com/AdpY4XlWKF

The better wins in the heats over 1050m on the A Grass came from FASHCHANEL (63.71; 34.89) and the pacy maiden SKEDADDLE (62.57; 34.29). Noted placegetters included MUCH MUCH BETTER, TOMMY GOLD, SOUTHERN LAD and CALIFORNIA CIBLE.

The 742m trials saw smart 2YO heat wins from the unraced filly SYRACUSE (43.72; 33.42) and KALASHNIKOV (43.47; 33.21), a colt who did not run to high expectations in his two spring starts but again showed he has plenty of ability with his sharp sprint over the last 100m of his heat.
