Ms Waterhouse was recognised for her distinguished service to the thoroughbred horse racing industry as a trainer along with her ambassadorial work in racing, particularly as a role model for women.

The Royal Randwick trainer has won more than 5000 races, including 144 Group 1s, and holds many training records such as seven Longines Golden Slipper stakes and seven The Star Doncaster Miles, among a stellar career.

Australian Turf Club Chief Executive Jamie Barkley said Gai Waterhouse was an icon of Australian racing.

"Gai Waterhouse is amongst the very elite of thoroughbred horse trainers in the long history of Sydney and Australian racing," Mr Barkley said.

"Equally, Gai's role as an ambassador for racing and the industry has been just as extraordinary and deserving of this great honour.

"The Australian Turf Club congratulates Gai on this greatly deserved honour."
