A barrier trial over 1000m at Geelong on Thursday could lead to three-year-old Crosshaven tackling Group 1 weight-for-age company first-up in the C F Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday week.
Crosshaven was a notable omission from entries in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on Saturday, but co-trainer Ben Hayes, who prepares the three-year-old with his cousin Tom Dabernig, said the Orr Stakes was on the radar instead.
"Daniel Stackhouse, his regular rider, just felt the 1200 metres might be bit on the short side," Hayes said.
"So the 1400, I know it's Group 1 level, but he might be able to travel a bit easier.
"There doesn't seem a lot of Group 1 horses around at the moment and he's pretty tough and a genuine racehorse.
"We'll see how he trials on Thursday and that will make our decision on whether we go to the Orr or not, but at this stage, that's the plan."
Hayes added another reason for tackling the Orr Stakes was to separate Crosshaven from another of their quality three-year-olds Aysar who will contest the Manfred Stakes first-up on Saturday.
The pair has met each other three times previously and are likely to clash again in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on February 27.
"And then maybe in the All-Star Mile two weeks later," Hayes said.
Lindsay Park is set to unveil a number of their autumn team in the Geelong trials on Thursday.
VRC Oaks winner Personal will be joined by Hindaam in a 1000m trial for three-year-old fillies while Group 1 Australian Cup winners Harlem and Fifty Stars are set to trial over 1500m and 1200m respectively.
Other horses of interest set to trial on Thursday include Probabeel and Mr Quickie in the opening heat over 1000m and Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet over 1200m in heat four.
