Frolic in the park for Thompson’s filly

3 minute read

Cressy trainer Cameron Thompson endured a lengthy run of outs, but it seems the stable has turned things around of late and with bold front-running gallopers.

In Brief

  • Frolicked filly wins for fun.
  • Thompson snares first Tasbred Bonus with Fun 'N' Frolic
  • Rank outsider almost causes boil over.

Thompson prepared Sparkling One to win by seven lengths first-up in Devonport and at Hobart last Sunday she repeated the dose winning by six lengths in a strong class one event over 1200m.

In Launceston on Wednesday night the stable's run continued when Thompson's well-bred filly Fun 'N' Frolic mirrored that effort by leading throughout with Siggy Carr aboard to win a Tasbred Bonus maiden over 1220 metres.

Fun 'N' Frolic (Mawingo-Frolicked) did not win by six lengths, but it was still emphatic and much to Thompson's delight.

"I was a big fan of this filly's dam, Frolicked, that was trained and bred by Graeme McCulloch, and that's why I bought her at the Tassie Magic Millions Yearling Sale," Thompson said.

"She has taken a while to deliver but I am hopeful that she can at least win another couple, but for the moment I'm happy she has broken her maiden status."

It also was the first Tasbred Bonus race Thompson has won, with an additional $16,000 to be poured into the winner's bank account and $4000 will make its way into breeder Graeme McCulloch's Grenville Stud account.

"These Tasbred bonuses have been the best thing for Tasmanian racing and this is the first for me.

"It is great for the owners and a couple of this filly's owners are first-timers, so all the extra money could encourage them to reinvest."

Thompson almost snared a double when his mare Louis' Choice when within a breath of winning the benchmark 66 handicap over 1420m.

Louis' Choice rattled home along the rails to figure in a desperately close photo-finish with Gee Gees Queenie that gained the nod from the judge by the narrowest of margins.

And his well-bred mare Lady produced her best effort this preparation with a third to Coronation Pia in a benchmark 60 handicap over 1620m.
