Neufbosc Out Of Carlyon Cup

3 minute read

Perth Cup winner Neufbosc's return to racing will have to wait at least another week, after a foot abscess ruled him out of tomorrow's Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) at Caulfield.

The six-year-old Neufbosc will now likely have to make his return at Flemington next Saturday or wait a fortnight for the Blue Diamond meeting at Caulfield where there are a couple of suitable races.

Trainer Neville Parnham said he was hopeful the setback would not derail the Melbourne campaign, where he's nominated for the All Star Mile on March 13.

"Unfortunately he's come up with a bit of a problem overnight and he won't be running," Parnham told TABradio.

"He should come good in the matter of a day or two hopefully but there's a little bit of work to do there.

"Hopefully, we will be able to get him around next week.

"I was going to from this race to either the 1800m Peter Young Stakes or the same day there was the Prelude for the Mornington Cup.

"There is a 1400m next Saturday but I'm not sure what weight he would get in it.

"There's always an option on the east coast."

Parnham will be hoping for a change in fortune at Pinjarra tomorrow, where he will saddle up Success Play in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m).

The Playing God colt finished fourth in the Crystal Slipper at Ascot late last year, before he was third behind Hoi An over 1008m at Bunbury on Australia Day.

Parnham said he was confident going into the Bunbury run, but felt the track pattern counted against him on that occasion.

"He finished up outside the leader, which wasn't ideal for the horse," he said.

"He was first-up after a break and he just looked a bit plain going to the line.

"Most of the horses came from off the pace at Bunbury that day and won."

Success Play, to be ridden by Chris Parnham, is a $34 chance with TABtouch for the $250,000 event, which is headed up by the Stephen Miller-trained Sniparoochy at $2.30.

Parnham has added blinkers to his charge and said he was surprised by the price.

"His work this week has been very good so I'm expecting him to run right up to his best," he said.

"His best is easily good enough to be very prominent in this field.

"He'll be ridden off the pace and with blinkers on that should only make him concentrate a little bit more."

Saturday's Pinjarra meeting gets underway at 11.48am, with the Magic Millions 2YO Classic to jump at 4.12pm.
