Supalopo seeking free-ride into Ladbrokes Launceston Cup

3 minute read

In Brief

  • Night Cup winner gains ballot-free entry into Ladbrokes Launceston Cup.
  • Needs Further gelding has won his past four impressively.

The Adam Trinder-trained Supalopo will cement a berth in the Group 3 Ladbrokes Launceston Cup if he emerges triumphant in the Armidale Stud Sydeston Night Cup over 2100 metres in Launceston on Wednesday night.

Trinder's rising star stayer has won his past four and he would only need to mirror his last-start effort in a benchmark 74 over 2150m to successfully take the next step.

Trinder had always planned to aim Supalopo at a 2022 Launceston Cup, but given the way he has developed and won his past few, the astute trainer could yet bring the clock forward a year.

Supalopo will be ridden by Anthony Darmanin who replaces Brendon Mccoull who is unable to ride at 54kg.

Brendon McCoull, who has been aboard the gelded son of Needs Further for three of his four wins, said after winning last start that the horse was ready to be tested against some proven stayers.

Wednesday night's field includes White Hawk that ran down the track in the Hobart Cup last Sunday after winning the weight-for-age Summer Cup at his previous outing.

But his trainer Angela Brakey says the horse thrives on racing and that tonight's race is what he needs before heading to the Ladbrokes Launceston Cup in a fortnight.

Alfa Gold Sovereign Stakes

Trinder will saddle up three two-year-olds in the $150,000 Alfa Gold Sovereign Stakes with Miss Charlie Brown his best winning chance.

Miss Charlie Brown went into the Elwick Stakes in Hobart last start unbeaten from two outings and ran on gamely to finish second to Turk Warrior over 1100m.

But back on the track on which she is undefeated could tip the scales in her favour if Turk warrior has an off night.

Trinder also will saddle up unraced filly Miss Tuppence that has trialled well and Outbound, a striking youngster by the same sire as Turk Warrior that was an impressive last-start winner in Launceston over 1120m.

The John Blacker trained Angeli (Artie Schiller-Paprina) flashed home late for second to Outbound at her only start two weeks ago and warrants respect and her stablemate Champagne Cinders, a striking grey filly, also looms as a place chance at odds.
