3 minute read

Tips and race by race preview by Brad Gray for Nowra’s Newhaven Park Country Championships meetin

Race 1 - 12:55PM CARPET COURT SHOWCASE CG&E MAIDEN HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

1. Genkides has the best form on the board, splitting Windsweep and subsequent winner Oakfield Hiawatha last start at Scone. Handles a heavy track fine on debut to suggest he'll get through it and the blinkers go on for the first time.

Dangers: Debutant 3. Terinda has caught the eye in his two most recent trials, however both were on the synthetic surface. The early money trail suggests he could be smart. 2. Lake Tai also showed something in his trials.

How to play it: Genkides WIN ($4.20 TAB Fixed Odds) Odds & Evens: ODDS

Race 2 - 1:35PM HQ INSURANCE SHOWCASE MAIDEN PLATE (1600 METRES)

12. Golden Chances was a beaten favourite at Bathurst last start but gets her chance to atone out the mile, a trip she is looking for now. The three-year-old is yet to see a heavy track but she has handled soft conditions in the past.

Dangers: 13. More Excitement did her best work across the line on debut also suggesting that she wants this trip. 9. Amore drops back to country level and has a great grounding for this coming off a 1500m Newcastle run on a soft track.

How to play it: Diorissima WIN ($6.50 TAB Fixed Odds) Odds & Evens: SPLIT

Race 3 - 2:10PM MICHAEL "MICK" LOCKE MEMORIAL SHOWCASE BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

4. Temperate finds a very winnable race back out to the mile. He dropped back to 1350m last start, off a four week freshen, yet still fought out the finish. He is perhaps more at home on top of the ground but he does get through the wet well enough.

Dangers: 7. Kentucky Award is holding his form well at the moment and handles all surfaces while the same can be said for stablemate 10. Sir Eagle. He was well beaten last start but that was at provincial level.

How to play it: Temperate WIN ($4.80 TAB Fixed Odds) Odds & Evens: SPLIT

Race 4 - 2:45PM BOMADERRY BOWLING CLUB SHOWCASE BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

5. Spectroscope is the most lightly-raced galloper in this field. The last time we saw him he knocked off his maiden. The Exosphere three-year-old is untried in wet ground and jumps in grade but like the way he trialled this time back.

Dangers: The query with 4. Salome is that his two runs for Robert and Luke Price on wet tracks haven't been flash. Sandwiched inbetween those was a nice win on top of the ground. Well placed here nonetheless.

How to play it: Spectroscope WIN ($4.80 TAB Fixed Odds) Odds & Evens: SPLIT

Race 5 - 3:25PM 2ST / POWER FM SHOWCASE F&M MAIDEN HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

1. Argyll Gardens finished last and fifth in her two trials but that doesn't do her justice. The latest of those, at Hawkesbury, saw her power through the line late. This is a tricky race to assess but Tommy Berry riding is a leg up too.

Dangers: 10. Luftwaffe has the benefit of race experience and this is one the easiest races she has ever contested. Unraced two-year-old 13. Crystal's Legacy has the speed to hold the inside draw and give cheek.

How to play it: Argyll Gardens WIN ($4.60 TAB Fixed Odds) Odds & Evens: ODDS

Race 6 - 4:05PM GO STEEL BUILDING PRODUCTS COUNTRY CLASS 2 PLATE (1400 METRES)

3. Clay Pan Boogie is yet to run a poor race in his six run career and would be surprised if he isn't somewhere in the money again. Just hoping he can settle a pair or too closer from the inside draw before hooking wide.

Dangers: 7. Tickler has been around the mark all preparation without really threating. This is no harder so expect him to be thereabouts again. 13. Danzadel appreciated the 1400m last start to break her maiden and can go on with it now.

How to play it: Clay Pan Boogie WIN ($7.50 TAB Fixed Odds) Odds & Evens: ODDS

Race 7 - 4:45PM NEWHAVEN PARK SERA COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS QUALIFIER (1400 METRES)

5. Leg Work gets a set up which should ensure he runs up to his best and if he does, he's a big player. The five-year-old grows a leg on the wet and you only have to go back to May last year to see that he beat 3. Art Cadeau fair and square in a 1400m Highway Handicap at Rosehill on a heavy track. He hit the line hard first up at Goulburn to tune him up for this mini grand final. That'll have him primed second up. Sam Clipperton will need to produce a peach from the wide draw but Leg Work tends to drift back anyways. Recent history also points to jockeys getting right off the fence when the track is wet at Nowra so it may be an advantage drawn out where he has. It's a race with five or six genuine winning hopes but at the odds, happy to side with Leg Work.

Dangers: That's no knock on Art Cadeau. He is still yet to finish outside of the quinella in nine career starts! Won a Highway on a dry track last start over 1100m. He is even better suited out in trip and on a wet track. 4. Rothenburg comes through the same lead up as Leg Work and also has claims. The shape of the race never gave the backmarkers a hope. He meets Leg Work 1.5kg better at the weights but thought Leg Work was the pick of the efforts given he was first up and Rothenburg second up. 8. Exotic Deel has built up a handy record of 11:4-2-3 and there was a lot to like about her last 100m at Canterbury last start behind Vreneli.

How to play it: Leg Work EACH WAY ($10 TAB Fixed Odds) Odds & Evens: ODDS

Race 8 - 5:25PM #VISIT SHOALHAVEN SHOWCASE BENCHMARK 66 HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

9. No Doubt A Star should get his chance to thunder home over the top of his rivals as he did at this same track and trip two starts ago beating 11. Nostro Re. Last start at Gosford he made steady late ground behind the very speedy Proud Mia.

Dangers: Respect the placement of 10. Blazing Mac here by Joe Pride. This mare ran in deeper races than this last preparation, with the exception of her Canberra maiden win but she belted her rivals. 4. Stone Cold best of the rest.

How to play it: No Doubt A Star EACH WAY ($11 TAB Fixed Odds) Odds & Evens: SPLIT
