Tregea Hopes To Toast Champagne Aunty

3 minute read

Form and breeding buffs should be on the same page when assessing the chances of the Steve Tregea-trained Champagne Aunty at Doomben on Thursday.

Champagne Aunty steps up to a middle distance for the first time and will be chasing her fourth win from only 10 starts in the Gallopers Sports Club Benchmark 72 Handicap over 2220 metres.

The four-year-old is coming off a last start second placing to the P & W Hulbert -trained Hail Manhattan in a 1615-metre Class 4 at Doomben on February 4.

Champagne Aunty was bred by Steve Tregea at his Windermere Stud outside Toowoomba and was successful at her previous two starts at Ipswich and Toowoomba.

She is closely related to Tregea's well-credentialed galloper Niccanova who is a Group 3 and multiple Listed winner with earnings of more than $916,000.

The daughter of Trusting has been out of the prizemoney only twice in her career when she failed on debut at the Sunshine Coast in September 2019, before her rider was dislodged at her second start at Toowoomba last August.

Since then, Champagne Aunty has recorded three wins and four placings.

"She's very consistent and tries hard and I see no reason why she won't run the trip," Tregea said.

"She's no world beater but her mother won over 2150 metres at Ipswich."

Tregea is unconcerned with Champagne Aunty's outside barrier eight.

"The alley won't worry her as she's got enough speed to cross them if need be," he said.

"She's versatile and can easily take a sit."

Champagne Aunty was named after one of Tregea's daughters, Hannah.

"I named her after my daughter Hannah who always had a champagne in her hand during her university days," Tregea said.

"Her two sisters used to call Hannah, Champagne Aunty.

"I said to Hannah I would name a horse after her one day and that's how Champagne Aunty got her name."
