Chequerboard shows class in Tasmanian Oaks

3 minute read

QUALITY Victorian three-year-old filly Chequerboard may have booked a trip to Sydney at Easter after scoring a brilliant win in the $150,000 Listed Tasmanian Oaks over 2100 metres in Launceston on Sunday.

The Tom Dabernig and Ben Hayes-trained filly finished second to star Tasmanian filly Hela in the Strutt Stakes in Hobart and that form encouraged punters to rally for the daughter of Fastnet Rock.

Chequerboard was heavily backed to start the $1.60 favourite and when rider Brendon Mccoull secured a perfect spot one-out one-back at the half-way mark, punters were lining up to collect.

Chequerboard stormed to the front at the top of the home straight and comfortably staved off all challengers to win by 1-1/2 lengths.

"We had this race in mind a while ago and it is great when a plan comes to fruition," said Dabernig-Hayes travelling foreman Garry Fennessy.

"We have always been confident this filly would run a strong 2400m, so Tom and Ben will look at the options, but she would be worthwhile taking to Sydney (for the AJC Oaks).

"It is also nice to be back in Tasmania because a few years ago I spent a bit of time here at carnival times, so hopefully the stable can keep bringing good horses down for the feature races.

"We have been well looked after at Adam Trinder's Devonport stables and we want to thank him and his staff for being so welcoming."

The Cindy Alderson-trained Queen Adele (Kyle Maskiell) made a dash at Chequerboard in the home straight and for a moment it looked as if the favourite might be in trouble, but when McCoull asked his filly for more she found enough to draw clear and win comfortably.

The Denis Pagan-trained My Squeeze Louise ($8) settled third and travelled well to the home turn and when rider Bulent Muhcu asked for an effort, she responded but was unable to haul in the first two placegetters.
