Well-bred mare Iamican will need to step up and impress trainer David Vandyke at Ipswich on Wednesday if she’s to be given another chance to chase Black Type during the winter carnival.

Iamican will attempt to complete a hat-trick of wins and her fourth in 12 starts when she runs in the fillies and mares' Class 3 Handicap over 1350 metres.

The daughter of I Am Invincible disappointed last campaign, failing to win in six starts before David Vandyke put her away for the spring.

The break allowed her to grow and improve mentally and she now is stepping up in distance after winning her past two starts over 1000 metres at the Sunshine Coast last month and a last start win at Ipswich on February 3.

"She's come back in good shape and this looks a nice race for her," Vandyke said.

"Mentally, she's working things out a lot better this time in and sometimes when they win it improves their confidence."

Iamican was a $475,000 buy at the 2018 Magic Millions sales at the Gold Coast and was given an opportunity at Stakes level when she failed behind Vanna Girl in the Listed Pam O'Neill at Doomben in May last year.

However, Vandyke is not getting ahead of himself and will see how Iamican performs before deciding whether to aim for the winter again.

"I'll see how she goes at Ipswich in the coming weeks before we start looking at the winter races," he said.

Meanwhile, Vandyke also is hopeful Brazen Breccia can break through in the QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Plate over 1600 metres.

Former Victorian Brazen Breccia has started three times for Vandyke and was placed at his past two appearances at Eagle Farm last month before a last start second to Our Rockin' in a 1600-metre maiden at the Sunshine Coast on February 7.

"I think Brazen Breccia should be hard to beat and he's bred to run 2400 metres," Vandyke said.

"He was stepping up in distance to 1600 metres last run and I'll keep stepping him as we go along.

"We might end up finding him a better race in the winter if he keeps progressing."

Trainer Rob Heathcote will be hoping debutante Startantes can follow her family's winning tradition in the QTIS Two-Year-Old Handicap.

Startantes - a Taylor Marshall mount - has shown early potential by winning an 840 metres barrier trial at Doomben on February 4.

Startantes is by Star Turn out of the Heathcote-trained Group 2 winner Funtantes.

Funtantes was a great money spinner for Heathcote winning 10 of her 50 starts including the Group 2 Champagne Classic and Listed wins in the Juanmo and Nudgee Stakes.

Startantes' grand dam, Cantantes has been one of the State's most prolific broodmares.
