Best Of Days to continue winning run in Blamey Stakes

3 minute read

James Cummings and the Godolphin team are banking on a return to winning form giving Best Of Days the confidence to continue that winning streak in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday.

Best Of Days  returned to form when taking out the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) at Caulfield on February 6, breaking a winless streak of more than two years.

The now seven-year-old had gone winless since scoring in the Group 1 Cantala Stakes (1600m) at Flemington during the 2018 Melbourne Cup carnival which followed a dead-heat victory with Mask Of Time in the Group 3 Coongy Cup (2000m) at Caulfield.

Best Of Days was winless for 21 starts before breaking through at Caulfield, although he had been placed on numerous occasions, including twice at Group 1 level in Perth.

Cummings said it was satisfying to see Best Of Days back in winning form.

"It had been a long time, but it came as no surprise, as his lead up form in Sydney had been terrific and he's continued to please the team at Flemington," Cummings said.

"We are confident he will handle the step-up in class."

Best Of Days will again be ridden by Damien Oliver on Saturday who guided the gelding to an all-the-way win at Caulfield.

The Mike Moroney-trained Buffalo River is the $2.60 favourite for Saturday's race which offers the victor a 'win and you're in' ticket into the $5 million All-Star Mile (1600m) at The Valley on March 13.

Best Of Days, not among nominations for the All-Star Mile, is the second pick at $5 ahead of Mystic Journey and Star Of The Seas at $5.50.

Cummings and Godolphin will be hoping to start the Flemington meeting on a bright note with Kallos in the Listed Very Special Kids Plate (1000m).

Kallos has raced twice, finishing fourth behind stablemate Telluride at The Valley on January 22 before again running fourth to General Beau in the Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) at Caulfield on February 6.

"He performed very well in a strong race last start behind General Beau and Anamoe," Cummings said.

"At his only run before that he was beaten a long neck when fourth at Moonee Valley. The straight track at Flemington should suit his style of racing."
