2021 REISLING STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Reisling Stakes is a Group 2 race for two-year-old fillies conducted by the Australian Turf Club as a major lead-up race to the Golden Slipper.

The race was first run as the Reisling Slipper Trial in 1973 and is traditionally run two weeks before the $3.5 million Golden Slipper, the world's richest two-year-old race.

The Reisling Stakes winner is exempt from ballot for the Golden Slipper.

The Reisling Stakes is named after the 2YO filly who won the Golden Slipper in 1965.

It was known as the Reisling Slipper Trial from 1973 until 2004 and has been run as the Reisling Stakes since 2005.

Since its inception the Reisling Stakes has been run over 1200m under set weight conditions. From 1973 to1979 the race was run under set weights with penalties. From 1980 to 1984 all fillies carried 54kg and since 1985 all fillies carry 55.5kg.

The Reisling Stakes became a Listed Race in 1979, a Group 3 race in 1980 and was promoted to Group 2 status in 1986.

The Reisling Stakes was traditionally run at Rosehill from 1973 until 2014 with the exception of 2008 when it was run at Canterbury. Since 2015 the Reisling Stakes has been run at Randwick.

The Reisling Stakes/Golden Slipper double has been won seven times by Hartshill (1974), Burst (1992), Merlene (1996), Belle Du Jour (2000), Polar Success (2003), Overreach (2013) and Estijaab (2018).

The Reisling Stakes/ATC Sires' Produce Stakes has been won four times (Shaybisc, Burst, Merlene and Fashions Afield) and the Reisling Stakes/Champagne Stakes double twice by Burst and Triscay.

Dame Giselle defeated See You Soon by a nose in 2020. It meant they had quinellad three races prior to the Golden Slipper.

The 2021 Reisling Stakes was worth $300,000 in prize money.

Other notable winners of the Reisling Stakes include Mistress Anne, Lowan Star, Vaindarra, Purpose, Magic Flute, Bold Promise, Rose Of Danehill, Regal Kiss, Alinghi, More Joyous, Samaready, Earthquake, English, Estijaab and Dame Giselle.

The 2020 Reisling Stakes was won by Dame Giselle from See You Soon and Mildred.
