2021 WENONA GIRL QUALITY - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Wenona Girl Quality is a Group 3 race for mares at Randwick conducted by the Australian Turf Club.

The Wenona Girl Quality was introduced in 2006. It is run under quality handicap conditions for mares 4YO and upwards with a maximum topweight of 61kg.

The Wenona Girl Quality has been run at Randwick each year since its inception with the exception of two runnings at Warwick Farm in 2011 and 2013.

The race is named after champion mare and Australian Racing Hall of Fame inductee Wenona Girl, who won 27 races in the late 1950s and early 1960s and retired as the highest stakes winning mare to have raced in Australia to that time.

In 2014 the race was named the Roy Higgins Tribute in memory of champion jockey Roy Higgins (1938–2014) who died in the same week.

The Wenona Girl Quality was run as a Listed race until 2013 and was upgraded to Group 3 in 2014.

The 2021 Wenona Girl Quality was worth $160,000 in prizemoney.

Ofcourseican won the Wenona Girl Quality in 2011 and the G1 Coolmore Classic in 2012. Griante won the Wenona Girl Quality in 2015 and G1 ATC Galaxy in 2016.

Previous winners include Kakakakatie, Belong To Many, Beaded, Ofcourseican, Rose Of Peace, Arinosa, A Time For Julia, Griante and Fasika.

The 2020 Wenona Girl Quality was won by Fasika from I Am Excited and Resin.
