Beau Jet Set For Townsville Return

3 minute read

Veteran sprinter Beau Jet is showing no signs of wear and tear as he bids to continue his excellent track record in the Sky Racing Handicap at Townsville’s Cluden Park on Thursday.

Nine-year-old Beau Jet showed there was plenty left in the legs, winning three of his past four starts when last in training before Christmas.

He has not started since winning a 1000-metre Coral Coast Shield Qualifier at Townsville last November.

Trainer Bill Kenning has done an outstanding job managing Beau Jet, who will be attempting to win for the 12th time in his 44-start career when he lines up over his pet distance of 1000 metres.

Beau Jet has started 26 times throughout his career over the 1000-metre dash for eight wins and seven placings.

He has an even better winning strike rate of 50% over the Cluden Park trip, with six wins and three placings from a dozen starts.

"He's an old warrior but he's only about 80% fit," Kenning said.

"He never sees the race track until race days as I take him to the beach most days and he's on the water walker other times.

"He's no good thing and I'm definitely not declaring him but he'll be there at the finish."

Kenning said Beau Jet was unlike most horses who have had a history of leg problems.

"He's a bit unusual in that he hates wet tracks unlike other horses who love the wet if they've had past feet issues," he said.

"He just goes best on dry tracks."

Kenning has booked Brad Pengelly to partner Beau Jet and his other runners; Lady Yendor in the Benchmark 70 Handicap over 1400 metres, Unshakeable in the Benchmark 60 Handicap (1609m) and Yin And Yang in the Class One Handicap (1300m).

"Beau Jet will run a good race but I think the other three probably have better chances," Kenning said.

Beau Jet was written off as a racing proposition when he first came to Kenning's stables in July, 2018.

He started his career in Brisbane with Steve O'Dea and looked to have had a bright future winning four of his first five starts including two in the metropolitan area.

After two years in the paddock, Kenning picked up Beau Jet who has gone on to win a further seven times in 24 starts in north Queensland.
