Yuill Claims Top Regional Prize

3 minute read

Jockey Kyra Yuill’s spectacular 2019-2020 racing season was recognised when she claimed the AJ (Tood) Buswell South Western Times Sports Star of the Year on Wednesday.

Bunbury-based Kyra Yuill claimed the top prize from joint runners-up Kara Svenson (Swimming) and Kye Blight (Speedway) who could not be separated in the tight competition.

It was the second occasion that Yuill had taken out the prestigious regional award after winning it in 2011 when she became the first female rider to win the Perth Cup.

Yuill booted home a career-best 125 winners in the 2019-2020 season and finished fifth overall on the Australian Jockeys Premiership table.

Her best win came in the Geraldton Cup when she guided home local galloper Freez'Emoff  for trainer Graeme Hammarquist.

Highly respected in racing circles for her work ethic and determination, Yuill has made a resurgence in the saddle after losing her way in the sport just over a year ago.

By her own admission a large part of her form turnaround was the appointment of close family friend and respected form analyst Daniel Cripps as her manager.

Yuill has ridden 663 winners since commencing her apprenticeship in 2011.

Aside from her historic Perth Cup triumph she has also been successful in the Colonel Reeves Stakes, the Belmont Newmarket, the Breeders Classic, the St Leger, the Pinjarra Classic, the Cyril Flower Stakes, the Northam Cup and the ATA Stakes twice.
