Stokes stable plays strong Saturday hand

The first 50m of the opening race at Morphettville on Saturday could very well shape the weekend for the Phillip Stokes stable.

They have three leading chances in Adelaide, led by Totally Discreet, and assistant trainer Tommy Stokes said the filly has the talent to make it successive wins but her barrier manners would be crucial.

"Hopefully she jumps clean from the rail and can lead them up,'' Stokes said.

"If that happens, she's going to be a very good winning chance.

"She hasn't gone backwards and if she runs like last start, she's right in it. If she irons out her manners she will improve again,'' he said

They have Neodium later in the day, a horse Stokes said had come back well but would improve as his campaign progresses.

"He's going super, and I think he's improved off last preparation,'' Stokes said.

"He resumes in stronger company this time around and it looks a competitive race.

"His jump outs have been super, the distance is short of his best, but he should figure,'' he said.

And Squizzy Mizzy will be trying to get back to winning form in the final race of the day, a race where Stokes believes could provide them the option to ride the horse off the speed with cover for the first time.

"There looks to be speed everywhere,'' Stokes said.

"We've always to take a sit with her but she's been too quick and too keen, but hopefully this race might give us the opportunity,'' he said.
