Teagan sticks to a positive attitude during injury rehab

3 minute read

Injured SA apprentice jockey Teagan Voorham was brandishing her walking stick at Morphettville on Adelaide Cup Day – but only as a precaution.

Teagan Voorham was injured in a trackwork fall in early December and needed surgery to repair a broken leg.

A broken femur required a pin and three screws to be inserted in her left leg and initial hopes of returning to riding in three months have since been adjusted.

However, Teagan is on the mend and only had the stick handy last week because of the extra hustle and bustle of Adelaide Cup Day.

"I can walk on my own now, without a walking stick," she said.

"But I still have my days when I need it, just to keep myself out of bad habits.

"Each day and each week it's getting stronger and better though."

Teagan started her career in Tasmania, before moving to Adelaide. She has since established herself on the local scene and had ridden 116 winners before three-year-old filly Amber Haze flipped over onto her and caused the painful injury.

Despite a slight limp, the 24-year-old remains in good spirits, is determined to continue her rehabilitation and is looking forward to clearing her next medical hurdle.

"I've actually got more X-rays with my surgeon in June," she said.

"I'm hoping he can give me a good result, and hopefully a clearance to come back riding.

"It's more or less going to be a time thing before that."

Prior to her injury Teagan was riding in strong form.

She rode a winner with her final ride before the mishap, guiding Masaru Warrior to victory at Murray Bridge on December 6, before the trackwork accident the next morning. Two days before her Murray Bridge success she also rode a winner at Penola.
