2021 NE MANION CUP - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The NE Manion Cup is Group 3 race conducted by the Australian Turf Club at Rosehill Gardens.

The NE Manion Cup was first run in 1973 and is named after Neuman Manion, a former chairman of the Sydney Turf Club from 1967-1972.

The NE Manion Cup is quality handicap horse race for three years old and upwards and has been run over 2400m since 1979 after being a 2000m event from 1973-1978.

The NE Manion Cup has been held annually at Rosehill and serves as a key lead-up race to the Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick.

The NE Manion Cup was a Group 3 race from 1979 to 2005 but was downgraded to Listed status from 2009-13. It regained Group 3 status in 2014.

The race was worth $160,000 in 2021.

NE Manion Cup winners to win the Sydney Cup in the same year have been Marooned (1986), Azzaam (1993), Mahtoum (2005) and The Offer (2014).

William Haggas brought two horses to Australia in 2020 and both won on the same Rosehill card with Addeybb in the Ranvet and Young Rascal in the Manion Cup.

Notable winners of the NE Manion Cup include three dual winners Dr Grace (1991-92), The Chieftain (2007-08) and Permit (2012/2015).

Others include Gala Supreme, Rhalif, Sean's Pride, Astrolin, Marooned, Indian Raj, Lord Hybrow, Azzaam, Praise Indeed, Pravda, Mahtoum, Precedence, Julienas, The Offer, Big Duke and Young Rascal.

The 2020 NE Manion Cup was won by Young Rascal from Mugatoo and Supernova.
