Pearce Brothers Dig Deep In Grandstand Cup

3 minute read

Co-trainer Ben Pearce is confident Dig Deep can win the Listed Seacorp-Grandstand Cup (1500m) at Ascot on Saturday.

Dig Deep opened at $5 with TABtouch and got out to as much as $7, but has been backed into $4.80 and second favouritism.

Pearce, who shares the training of Dig Deep with his brother Dan, said the four-year-old had come on in leaps and bounds since the Bunbury Stakes (1400m).

The 2019 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) hero ran 10th to Western Temple, but his effort after a month out from a minor set-back was a lot better than it looked.

He arguably could have gone much closer if not better after getting squeezed and held up from gaining a clear run over the concluding stages of the feature race.

"He just had no luck and got stopped in his tracks at a vital time," Pearce told The Races WA.

"That was his first run in just over a month so he will benefit from that.

"He missed the Pinjarra Classic with a sore foot but is right now.

"He has really come on and I think he will be real hard to beat.

"I believe he is our best of the day."

The Pearce brothers can launch the Ascot meeting on a winning note when Pletto looks to break through in the Crown Perth Westspeed Platinum Handicap (1400m).

Drawn in barrier one for jockey Brad Rawiller, Pletto is bursting to win a race after three placings from as many starts this campaign.

"She is going well, but hasn't had much luck go her way," Pearce said.

"We've been waiting to get her to a mile, but there are not a lot of options.

"Hopefully she gets luck from barrier one, but she does drop in grade."

Punters have swarmed to Pletto. She is the hot $1.95 favourite.

Pearce believes Policiere can rebound and strengthen her Karrakatta Plate (1200m) aims when she tackles the Furphy-Gimcrack Stakes (1100m).

A dual Ascot winner in December and January, the Safeguard filly returned to run sixth behind Liwa in last Saturday week's Supremacy Stakes (1000m).

Jockey Joe Azzopardi maintains his role with Policiere.  After copping barrier 10 at her past two starts, she has drawn perfectly in barrier three.

"She finally draws a gate," Pearce said.

"She is a tough filly and will benefit from her first up run."

Policiere is $7 with TABtouch.

Pearce also said Allmamoney will need to step up again in the Neometals Handicap (1400m) after winning a Bunbury maiden.
