In Brief

  • The Risk Factor makes it four wins in succession.
  • St. Leger could cap the geldings great season.
  • Sanction King gives Trinder a training double.

The Risk Factor has won all his races over the St Leger distance, so the $30,000 race seems a natural option but it is an open handicap and that will be a serious test for the gelded son of The Factor.

His latest win was in a benchmark 74 handicap, but it was more a glorified benchmark 66 as there were no genuine BM74 horses in the field.

"The horse has done a good job already and the St. Leger isn't far away, but I will make an assessment on whether we push on to that race a bit closer to the time."

Brendon McCoull partnered The Risk Factor, and he was suitably impressed by the gelding's latest effort.

"He is still quite green and is doing it on raw ability, but he settled quite well tonight and he always seemed to be in control of the situation.

"He has a bit to learn but he is in good hands with Adam and obviously has a lot of upside going forward."

"It wasn't that long ago that this horse couldn't win a maiden but now he would be one of the most improved horses in the state."

The St. Leger will be run in Launceston on 7 April, which is the last night meeting of the season.

The Risk Factor was the first leg of a winning double for Trinder who also saddled up Sanction King to win the benchmark 66 handicap over 1200m, also with Brendon McCoull aboard.

Tearaway leader Tezlah ($20) showed fight when Sanction King ($3 fav) came for him at the top of the home straight and when Merciabelle ($5) and Stinka ($10) chimed in with their runs he was able to repel those challenges and hit the line a clear winner.
