Spartan Jet can return to winners' list

3 minute read

A change in tactics could be the key to consistent Toowoomba sprinter Spartan Jet returning to the winners' list in the Channel 7 Benchmark 65 Handicap at Ipswich on Wednesday.

Spartan Jet has missed a place only once from his past seven starts, which has produced two wins and four placings.

The only time the five-year-old was unplaced was when a close fourth in a 1400-metre Benchmark race at the Sunshine Coast in February.

That defeat came off two wins – both over 1400 metres – at Dalby on January 22 and a Class 4 win at the Gold Coast on February 6.

Since then, the son of Jet Spur finished second when stepping up to 1600 metres for the first time at the Sunshine Coast on March 14 before a last start third to Foreign Territory in a 1400-metre Class 4 at the same track two weeks later.

Trainer Kevin Kemp has booked stable apprentice Madeline Wishart to ride Spartan Jet and won't be surprised if the gelding leads.

"He's been very consistent right through his career when ridden from behind and he's always around the mark," Kemp said.

"But he does have a mind of his own and can go forward if need be.

"Last start he wouldn't jump for some reason and got back to last so hopefully his mind will be on the job this time and he could lead."

Kemp is unconcerned about the possibility of more rain with Ipswich currently a Soft 5.

"A wet track won't worry him as he's won on a heavy and loved it," Kemp said.

Kemp also has also booked Wishart to ride stablemate Best To Hurry, who resumes in the Class 3 Handicap over 800 metres.

Best To Hurry hasn't raced since finishing near last behind Starosa in a 1350-metre three-year-old race at Doomben on November 7.

The son of Mahisara registered only the second win of his career at his previous start when successful on a heavy track at Toowoomba.

"Best To Hurry is a big strong horse who should run well fresh," Kemp said.

"He's only young but he's done a good job so far.

"He has won first-up before and I'm hopeful he may turn into a good horse later on."
