The ‘ultimate’ gear change has done the trick for Magic Ruler as the son of Snitzel waltzed in to claim his maiden victory at Canterbury on Wednesday.
The three-year-old had been promising during the first five starts of his career, but could never manage to put it all together.
But gelding did the trick, with Magic Ruler leading the field of six from start to finish and kicked away over the concluding stages to score by two lengths on the line.
Tyson King, stable representative for Matthew Dunn, said the team was happy with the result, but will leave it up to the boss for the three-year-old's future tasks.
"It was a pretty nice ride by Kerrin. (We are) Happy with the result," he said.
"He's a lovely horse to have around the barn, he's very trainable.
"We'll leave it to Matt (Dunn) as to what his future stands for.
"He's got the job done today and that's what we were here for."
Magic Ruler jumped cleanly from barrier two and went straight to the lead and was taken on in the early and middle stages by first-starter Pascal.
But the son of Snitzel fought off the challenge and kicked away with 200 metres left to run, it what was an easy watch for punters who took the $2.20 on offer.
It was Kerrin McEvoy's first win on the day, with the star jockey saying the gelding was enjoying himself and the wet conditions.
"Once I began better than the horse inside of me, I just tried to get him in a nice rhythm, and he relaxed and he really enjoyed himself," he said.
"He got through the ground nicely, which his form showed that he could when he ran here last.
"He gave a kick when I asked and got through it nicely."
Matthew Dunn will also saddle up stable star Snitz at Gosford on Saturday.
The six-year-old is set to race in the Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) at Listed level and is currently a $7 chance with tab.com.au.
King said Snitz has been impressing in his trackwork.
"We were unlucky at Hawkesbury, a bad barrier and the rest was history from that," he said.
"But his work at home has been perfect. He's towing Keira (Dunn's wife) through the line and is as happy as he's ever been."
