Glen Thompson-trained Avion Fury notched up a well-earned victory in the Ironhorse BM78 (2100m) at Gosford on Saturday.

The four-year-old was able to sit closer to the leaders than his previous outings and was able to fight off his competitors in the straight to win by 0.32 lengths on the line.

It was the son of More Than Ready's fourth win from 17 starts, with two of those now coming on rain affected surfaces.

Glen Thompson was happy with the performance especially with concerns about the track.

"It was a great result. He seems to appreciate the soft going," He said.

"Gosford's a short straight and for a horse that gets back it was a little bit of a concern, but it was a 10/10 ride from Kerrin (McEvoy).

"He got him going at the right time and got the result.

"He'd been racing well and deserved to finally get another win."

Two starts ago, Avion Fury finished a close fifth in the Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes over 2000 metres, outlining the opinion Thompson has of the gelding.

After his win on Saturday, the Warwick Farm-based trainer says the four-year-old could be seen in more stakes races in the future.

"He definitely has the ability, his runs in those races were good, where he just got too far out of his ground and was giving them too much head start," he said.

"You can see the difference on Saturday when he can be a bit closer, it's obviously a big advantage.

"I think if he can draw a better gate in those sorts of races down the track, and be a bit closer, he'll be competitive in them.

"(We're) Giving him a few days out in the paddock just now. He'll probably come back at the end of the week and then we'll just see how he comes back, and we'll work out what to do with him next."
