2021 DAVID COLES STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The David Coles AM Stakes is a Group 3 race for two-year-olds conducted by the South Australian Jockey Club at Morphettville in Adelaide.

The David Coles AM Stakes is run over 1200m under set weight conditions and is a feature of the Goodwood Handicap program during the SAJC autumn carnival.

Known as the National Stakes from 1985-1993 and from 1994 to 2012 under a variety of sponsorship names. It reverted to the National Stakes in 2013. However it was changed again to be the David Coles AM Stakes from 2021.

The David Coles AM Stakes was a Listed race in 1985 and 1986 and has been Group 3 since 1987.

The 2021 David Coles AM Stakes was run for prizemoney of $127,250.

Leon Macdonald took over the National Stakes training record with four wins in 2020.

Notable winners of the National Stakes include Seiger, Kaapstad, Pride Of Ingenue, Dancer's Choice, Jakpil, Mookta, Will Fly, La Baraka, Super Elegant, Great Is Great, Majestic Music, Toorak Toff, Moonovermanhattan and I Am A Star.

The 2020 National Stakes was won by Extra Time from Kazuhiko and Hard Rock Girl.
