It will be a popular homecoming for former top jockey Corey Brown when he heads to Taree for the Wingham Cup meeting tomorrow week (Monday June 7).
Corey Brown recently retired from riding due to a serious back injury incurred in a Queensland race fall in 2019.
In a stellar career that saw him claim 2466 races and 49 Group Ones, Brown counts among his majors two Melbourne Cups, two Sydney Cups, two Australian Derbies and a Victoria Derby.
One of his most memorable days was at Royal Randwick in October 2003 when he booted home a trio of Group One winners, Niello (Spring Champion Stakes), Unearthly (Flight Stakes) and Clangalang (Epsom Handicap).
His first ever winner was at nearby Kempsey in 1991 on Another Square when a fresh-faced 15-year-old.
Corey was born in Taree 45 years ago on June 15 and will be a special guest of Manning Valley Race Club.
"Corey is very popular up here and no doubt there'll be selfie requests galore," declared Helen Sinclair, executive officer for MVRC.
"Corey loves to support his hometown Cup and aside from the June 7 raceday, he will be attending the Wingham Cup Calcutta at Wingham Services Club from 7pm on the Sunday (June 6).
"Another retired jockey Shane Arnold will also be present at the Calcutta.
"The Wingham Cup has a long history and is an integral part of Manning Valley Race Club's racing program.
"The Cup is scheduled for June each year and is supported by businesses and the community of Wingham.
"We encourage all residents and visitors to the Mid North Coast to take this opportunity to come to a country race meeting that offers great food, two bars and, of course, be able to meet and greet Corey Brown.
"Corey will also present the Wingham Cup on the Monday."
Meanwhile, Sapphire Coast Turf Club will host its Winter Raceday on Tuesday.
"We have a seven-race TAB program featuring the $24,000 Winter Cup (1600m) and the Winter Sprint (1200m)," said Jess O'Donnell, SCTC's Sponsorship & Marketing Co-Ordinator.
"There are also buses operating, just check our website for further details.

Murrumbidgee Turf Club races next Friday at Wagga with the highlights the $27,000 Lamont Classic (1300m) for two-year-olds and a $22,000 Heat of the Wagga Stayer Series (2000m).
