The win by well-bred filly Tidal in Devonport on Sunday gave Westbury farrier Bradley Franklin his first win as a trainer.

In Brief

  • Farrier snares first training win.
  • Trinder offered Franklin good advice.
  • Winning an amazing feeling for novice trainer.

Tidal stormed home to score comfortably in the Kevin Sharkie Maiden over 1009 metres, but it was much to the chagrin of punters as the daughter of Kuroshio was one of the outsiders at $61.

Bradley Franklin comes from a racing family as his father Ronnie Franklin rode successfully in New Zealand and his grandfather is Trevor Jones, a legendary jockey who was inducted into the Tasmanian Racing Hall of Fame two years ago.

"I've always wanted to train horses, but I made my way into the industry as a farrier and while this is a brilliant feeling (training a winner) I have no plans to do it full-time," Franklin said.

Franklin's mother Joanna Franklin, who was on strapper duty yesterday, said her son has been "horse mad" ever since he was a toddler.

"Bradley wanted to be a jockey and he was probably a bit disappointed that his size was always going to rule that out, but horses have been such an integral part of his life that it came as no surprise that he ended up doing something in racing and we are so proud of him," Mrs Franklin said.

Tidal was originally trained by Adam Trinder, but when the COVID pandemic hit the filly's owner faced financial strain and she was forced to sell two horses she had with Trinder.

"Adam (Trinder) said he had two horses I could choose from but suggested Tidal might be the best option, so I bought her for about $2500," Franklin said.

"They told me winning a race would be one of the best feeling's I've ever had, and they were right."
