Bring It Home Pop on trial for Rockhampton Newmarket

3 minute read

Trainer Darryl Hansen is hopeful Bring It Home Pop can book a return ticket for the Northern Queensland Winter Racing Carnival when the gelding makes his comeback at Doomben on Wednesday.

Bring It Home Pop – who resumes in the Open Handicap over 1110 metres – had a short three-start winter campaign up north, winning in Rockhampton last July before two unplaced starts in Townsville.

"He won an Open at Rocky before he was sent to Townsville for the Cleveland Bay, but unfortunately he didn't go as good as we expected in that," Darryl Hansen said.

"He had a nice run in the Cleveland Bay but Townsville can be a tricky track for new horses and they need a bit of experience running there."

Bring It Home Pop has won six times in 31 starts but has not started since beating one home in a 1200-metre Open at Rockhampton in mid-December.

The six-year-old son of Rothesay will head into his first start in six months off the back of a barrier trial win over 850 metres at the Sunshine Coast on June 1.

"He won his trial well and he goes pretty good first-up," Hansen said.

"There's no reason why he can't win."

Hansen has been a regular visitor for the winter carnivals in Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns in recent years.

He has won has four Rockhampton Newmarket Handicaps, a Mackay Cup and Townsville Cup but is yet to win the major trophies in the Rockhampton Cup or Cleveland Bay.

"I'm heading back there this year but with a much smaller team this time," Hansen said.

"I've pencilled in the Tattersall's Sprint on June 25 for Bring It Home Pop and if he goes good in that he'll head to the Newmarket."

The $100,000 Newmarket Handicap over 1200 metres at Callaghan Park will be run on July 9.

Apart from Bring It Home Pop, Hansen will send Doctor Zous and Fast Train north and possibly another travelling companion.

"Doctor Zous won the Newmarket in Rockhampton last year so hopefully he can go back and defend his crown," Hansen said.
